How can you tell whether a condom has expired?

Male condoms that haven’t expired are about 98% effective when properly used, but condoms which are past its expiry date can greatly reduce its effectiveness. You can easily find the expiration date on the box and the individual wrapper. The average life of a condom is 5 years, depending on the brand and how it’s been stored. It’s a good idea to check the expiration date when you first buy the condoms and recheck them regularly and replace them before they reach that date.

It is important to store condoms in a cool, dry place and away from any sharp objects and direct sunlight. So you should not keep a condom in your pocket or wallet where there are sharp things like coins and keys. Extra friction can also make condoms less effective. You should also not store condoms in a wet environment such as the washing room. Extreme heat and direct light can make latex weak in only a few hours, so you should not store your condoms in your car or near the window.

Of course, using an expired condom is still better than not using a condom at all, especially if the expired condom has been stored properly in a cool, dry place. Though you may use another form of birth control, without a condom you cannot protect yourself against STDs and STIs.

You should check condoms before use. If the wrapper is torn, discolored, or you see leaking lube, or if the condom is dry, stiff, sticky or has an awful smell, toss it!

Besides the expiration date, you should also check the wrapper for holes before use. Squeeze the wrapper and see if you feel any little air bubbles. When in doubt, dump it.
